AI Art

My use of “Creates” in reference to AI is wrong in this article. AI doesn't know how to create. It uses the information that it has, and spits out what it thinks matches.

AI art is a pretty decent sized topic in my life. As a traditional artist, I get told a lot that AI is faster and easier. However, making art isn’t supposed to be easy. It is not why we do it.

Now in this article, I am talking about traditional art. But anything a human creates I would consider art. Programming, another side of me, I find fascinating. I would count it as a type of art, but to each their own.

Art is supposed to be created through trial and error. Art is supposed to be created through frustration. Failure. What YOU want to make. Comparing art that we as artists do to what AI can create is the complete wrong idea- and they are actually polar opposites. AI finds SIMILARITY through chaos. Artists find meaning in it.

AI is the vexatious death of meaning in art. It corrupts creativity. With it, everybody has the opportunity to become artists or makers, taking credit for the blood, sweat, and tears that they ultimately didn't shed.

There is a difference between "Prompting" and "Creating." You prompt, ai creates. The act of actualizing the art into reality is what makes one an artist. There is more than just the idea and then the product. Creativity is your ability to create in your OWN way. Not just having imagination and then going out and commanding someone to create it for you. As long as a person thinks perfecting a prompt is an act of creativity, the more they are losing touch with humanity. Cheating to achieve perfection defeats the whole purpose of art.

So, what is the moral of the story? Writing prompts is a creative exercise- in the way that walking to the fridge and grabbing another beer is a muscular exercise. There is no little actual exercise being there that is not beneficial to the person doing it. They would be much better off exercising their creativity with a creative writing prompt, a drawing, or even just visualizing an image. Creativity is a muscle. If you get up to go grab another beer a couple dozen times every day, does that make you an olympian athlete or a drunk?
